Mission: To empower, strengthen, and develop a healthy Maryvale by reducing drug and alcohol use through community led efforts.
Vision: To establish a healthy community that supports youth and families.
The Touchstone Prevention Project is funded by a grant from Magellan, provides comprehensive and effective prevention to the Maryvale community aimed at reducing substance abuse and suicide. The program focuses on four key components: the individual, school, family, and community. It is vital that these four components are linked together in order for the program to be considered effective.
Community in Action formally known as Local School Task Force (LSTF) was established in March of 2003. In the beginning, the LSTF primarily provided school/community based services to meet the needs of all residents within the school area in which Touchstone served. Through these efforts, the LSTF partnered with schools, local businesses and government, key stakeholders and community residents to create a safe and healthy environment for families to live. During the early years, Touchstone Prevention staff and the LSTF committee collaborated to address various social issues surrounding the community including crime, substance abuse related issues, bullying, lack of family support, and a host of other problems in the area.
In July of 2007, the birth of Community in Action (C.I.A.) was incorporated. Community in Action is a grassroots community coalition that aims to reduce substance abuse in Maryvale. In 2008, C.I.A. joined forces with the C.O.P.E. coalition to strengthen their resources and efforts in order to provide quality service to the resident in Maryvale. Eventually C.I.A. became the community subcommittee of C.O.P.E. because of the large resident voice in the coalition. C.O.P.E.-C.I.A focuses on building awareness of substance abuse, especially underage drinking, and targets it through a variety of environmental strategies that focus on making community level change.
